While Rubens Barrichello’s accident wasn’t fatal, it was the precursor of worse to come. Barichello would race again after recovering from his injuries, but not everyone was so lucky that weekend.
Ayrton Senna’s Fatal Crash – Imola
There were two other separate accidents that weekend and both were fatal. Roland Ratzenberger tragically lost his life, as did world champion Ayrton Senna, as seen in the video below. It definitely rates as one of the most tragic weekends in racing history.
Le Mans 1955 Accident
As long as there’s been cars racing round tracks for our entertainment, there’s also been the inevitable accidents that happen when cars are traveling at breakneck speeds. In this classic video from the 1955 Le Mans, a car actually launches into the air and winds up in the crowd. Tragically, it wasn’t only the driver that lost his life that day. More than eighty spectators died that day as well.
