Competitors

Larger and often better-equipped when compared to many compact SUVs, the Outback can be thought of as an alternative to midsize SUVs. The burly Subaru wagon holds a unique place in the market where nothing else quite compares, an expected distinction for the individualistic Japanese automaker known for quirky but oddly charming automobiles.

Depending on what you need your SUV or wagon to do, competitors for the Outback might include the Jeep Grand Cherokee, Nissan Murano, Ford Edge, Hyundai Santa Fe Sport, or Kia Sorento. Arguably, the only competitor listed that might best the Subaru in off-road and unpaved road challenges is the Jeep.

Another notable contender is Subaru’s own Forester, priced less expensively, but offering similar utility in a smaller package.
