Zombies of the Open Road: 10 Cars That Just Won’t Quit

For most of us, when the odometer on our car goes around for the second time, it’s a sign that the end is near.  Soon, the old steed will give up the ghost and it’ll be time to find a new one (or at least a less old one).  But here are some cars that have truly gone above and beyond the call of duty.

Trusty Steed: 1981 Mercedes 240 D

Lovingly cared for by its owner, Paul Harman of Georgia, this cream-coloured classic passed the one million mile mark in 2008 and is still going strong.  But even the best cars need maintaining. Paul Harman has had to refurbish the engine, replace the timing chains, and, of course, have regular oil changes to go so far in one car.

Reliable Transportation: 1990 Honda Accord

This light blue sedan got to be in a parade in Saco, Maine, sponsored by Honda when it passed the one million mile mark. Owner and master mechanic Joe LoCicero bought it used with 74,000 miles on it, and he and his wife and children put on the other 926,000!  He rebuilt the engine once, but it was the upholstery that wore out the fastest.

Unstoppable Guinea Pig: 1990 BMW 325i

This white beauty has been testing Mobil Oil’s products all its life.  It has only been on the road for about 40,000 miles, because it was run on a stationary dynamometer for four years at the equivalent of 85 miles per hour (with regular maintenance, of course). After surpassing the one million mile mark, Mobil’s mechanics were happy to report that wear on the engine was negligible.

Little Gem: 1964 Porsche 356

This black sporty classic, owned by Guy Newmark of California, has also passed the one million mile mark. He almost lost his little sweetheart when it was stolen in 2013. Fortunately it was recovered with not too much damage, and Guy is back in the driver seat.

Boxy Elegance: 1983 Lincoln Town Car

Still on the road and making long road trips, this silver “land cruiser” has passed the 1.3 million mile mark. The owner, Chet Belisle of Topeka, KS, makes sure that he buys only parts with lifetime warranties and has also had the engine rebuilt.  But he has never had a breakdown on his many trips.

Dependable Hauler: 2006 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 HD

Hugh and Tammy Pennington of Michigan have been using this silver pickup to haul and deliver camping trailers since it was new.  They put one million miles on it in just six years.
