Ferrari 250 GTO

We’re going to end this list with the single most expensive car ever sold at auction – a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO that fetched an absolutely mind-boggling price of $38,115,000 in 2014. That number seems impossible, considering the original sale price of the car was a whopping $18,000 in the U.S.

However, they were never easy to get, as the buyers needed the personal approval of Mr. Enzo Ferrari himself. What’s more, since the car was designed with racing intentions, it doesn’t even include basics like carpeting. You don’t get much for $38 million these days.

Unless you’re due for a big raise down at the office, owning one of the cars on the above list is likely not in the cards. However, that doesn’t mean it isn’t fun to learn about the history and heritage of these legendary vehicles.

After all, there is an upside to having people who are willing to pay such incredible prices for classic cars – they go to great lengths to preserve them for years to come. If not for the financial worth attached to these collector’s items, they very well may have headed to the scrap heap long ago.

One thing is certain – it won’t be long before another rare Ferrari hits the auction block, and another record will be set by a bidder with the passion and bank account to bring home a piece of automotive history.
