General Motors has redesigned its famous logo as they shift focus towards electric vehicles.

It’s the first time in more than 50 years that GM has redesigned their corporate logo. The redesign eliminates the blue background. It also removes the underline on the uppercase “GM” initials. In their place comes a rounded blue box surrounding the GM initials. And now the letters are lowercase and only the “m” is underlined. A lighter shade of sky blue is used, presumably to portray a sense of environmental responsibility.

GM’s latest logo is only the fifth time that the company has changed its insignia throughout its 113-year history. The last time the automaker significantly updated its logo was in 1964. However, they have tweaked it slightly over the years, as you can see in the graphic below.

The new branding arrives as the company invests heavily in electric vehicles. GM has already developed EVs such as the EV1 and the Chevrolet Bolt. The company continues to move forward in the space with its forthcoming Ultium line of EV components. That technology is due to enter production in upcoming vehicles such as the 2022 GMC Hummer EV and 2023 Cadillac Lyriq crossover SUV.

GM has said that it plans to launch a total of 30 different EV models globally by 2025. Similarly, the automaker has set a goal of selling more than one million EVs per year in North America and China by the middle of the current decade.
